Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has directed the immediate arrest and prosecution of members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade involved in a shooting at Emeka Offor Plaza, Onitsha Main Market.
The incident, which occurred during enforcement operations on Tuesday, led to the death of a young woman, Miss Chinwe Igwe, while several others sustained injuries, including a pregnant woman.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the governor ordered that the officers be handed over to the Police for investigation and prosecution, assuring that full medical care would be provided for the injured.
The OCHA Brigade, set up to enforce sanitation laws, has long faced allegations of harassment and extortion. The latest incident heightened public anger and caused panic within the busy market.
Normalcy has since been restored by the Police, with patrols ongoing to maintain peace in the area.
