The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for international sanctions against Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the organisers of the Ikogosi Marathon over an alleged attack on him and members of his team.

Sowore made the demand in a statement shared on X, accusing the organisers, led by Makinde Araoye, of being involved in what he described as a deadly assassination plot against him.

He urged World Athletics, the global governing body for the sport, to sanction the organisers and blacklist them from hosting or taking part in future sporting events.

The AAC presidential candidate also accused the organisers and the Ekiti State Government of either participating in the alleged attack or helping to facilitate it. He called for an independent investigation into their alleged roles.

“Sporting events must never become hunting grounds for political thugs, government-sponsored violence, intimidation, or assassination,” he wrote.

Sowore said he would pursue legal action against the organisers and the state government at both national and international levels.

He also insisted that everyone involved in the alleged attack must be held accountable, regardless of their political position or connections within government.
