Nigeria’s slim hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup hang in the balance as the Super Eagles battle South Africa in a decisive qualifier on Tuesday in Bloemfontein.
The encounter has been billed as make-or-break for both nations. For Nigeria, anything short of victory could end their campaign. The Super Eagles sit third in the group with 10 points, trailing South Africa by six, with only three matches left to play. To keep their World Cup dream alive, they must win every remaining game.
Saturday’s narrow 1-0 win over Rwanda offered brief relief, but came at a cost. Star striker Victor Osimhen limped off with an ankle injury in the first half, forcing new Wolves signing Tolu Arokodare to step up. The 23-year-old striker delivered, scoring the winner after coming off the bench.
Without Osimhen, coach Eric Chelle faces a tactical puzzle. His diamond formation against Rwanda left spaces exposed on the flanks, and he may be forced to revert to a more balanced 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 system against the Bafana Bafana.
For the hosts, the stakes are straightforward. A win in front of their fans would all but guarantee their spot at the World Cup, barring any potential FIFA sanctions. With South Africa’s form surging, Nigeria’s survival fight has never looked more daunting.
