The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has stepped up efforts to improve the country’s electricity network by partnering with the Federal Ministry of Transportation to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway facilities to the national grid. The move is expected to provide a stable electricity supply that will support efficient railway operations and strengthen critical infrastructure.

The agreement followed a strategic stakeholders’ meeting at TCN’s Kano Regional Headquarters, where participants discussed plans for the national grid connection. The project will cover the Kano Railway Station and other operational railway facilities under the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

The General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engineer M.K. Bello, stressed the importance of early technical collaboration among all parties. He said close cooperation would help ensure smooth implementation and provide a reliable power supply for railway services.

Stakeholders also reviewed the technical requirements, project schedule, operational coordination and safety measures needed for the national grid connection. They agreed to work together to meet grid standards, maintain network safety and ensure seamless integration into Nigeria’s transmission system.

The project is expected to improve railway operations, enhance service delivery and support the Federal Government’s broader infrastructure development goals through a more dependable electricity supply.

Meanwhile, TCN has received two new 100MVA power transformers for installation at the ongoing 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation in Katsina. The equipment forms part of the company’s wider grid expansion programme aimed at increasing electricity transmission across the country.

According to TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, the transformers will add 160MW to the region’s transmission capacity once installed and commissioned. The upgraded substation will improve the reliability, flexibility and efficiency of power transmission while increasing the company’s ability to deliver bulk electricity to Distribution Companies serving Katsina State and surrounding areas.

The national grid connection project and the new Katsina substation reflect TCN’s ongoing investment in modernising Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure to meet rising energy demand.

How important do you think reliable electricity is to improving Nigeria’s transport and economic development?
