“The land on which it is built is experiencing an extraordinary impact from all that weight.”

According to a study, the ground beneath New York City is sinking in part as a result of the city’s massive number of structures.

Researchers at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimate that 762 million tonnes (1.68 trillion pounds) of concrete, glass, and steel are present on the 300 square miles (777 square kilometers) that make up New York City.

Researchers have found that the ground is sinking by 1-2mm (0.04-0.08in) year.

According to geologist Tom Parsons, New York City “can be seen as a proxy for other coastal cities in the US and around the world that have growing populations as a result of people migrating to them.”
