On Friday, a gunman opened fire in central Paris near the Gare de l’Est station near a Kurdish cultural center, killing two people and injuring four more.

According to AFP, the suspect in the attack, a 69-year-old man, was apprehended swiftly by police.

Authorities urged people to avoid the neighborhood at Rue d’Enghien, in Strasbourg-Saint Denis’s 10th district.

There has been no indication of the reason or aim of the shooting, while sources indicate that the suspect is a French national who is wanted for two attempted murders.

“We’ve shut ourselves in,” a female shopkeeper told AFP, adding that she had heard seven or eight bursts of gunfire.

Two of those injured in the incident are claimed to be in critical condition, while two others were gravely injured.

Police reportedly apprehended the suspect without resistance and retrieved the weapon used in the crime. Prosecutors said that a murder inquiry had been launched.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, hailed the police for their decisive action.

There are various restaurants and stores on the street near the Château d’Eau metro station, as well as a cultural center. According to local Mayor Alexandra Cordebard, it is a very busy neighbourhood.

Another witness stated that the street was now filled of emergency personnel who were waiting to be allowed to leave.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said he was going to Paris to see the “dramatic shooting,” and that his condolences were with the victims’ friends and families.
