Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Regional Director-elect, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the age of 55. A distinguished Tanzanian politician and public health expert, Ndugulile was born in 1969 and had recently been elected to succeed Dr. Matshidiso Moeti as Regional Director after her decade-long tenure.

Ndugulile’s nomination was formalized during the 74th WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, and was set to be ratified by the WHO Executive Board in February 2025. His untimely death has left a profound void in global health leadership.

Reacting to the news, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed shock, writing on his X handle: “Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Tanzania.”

Similarly, outgoing Regional Director Dr. Matshidiso Moeti mourned the loss, calling it an “immense tragedy” and extending her team’s condolences to his loved ones. WHO Nigeria Representative Dr. Mulombo Kazadi also reflected on the loss, stating: “Sad news for Africa and the world. We give glory to Almighty God because only He knows why.”

Tanzania’s President Samia Hassan joined in honoring Ndugulile’s legacy, describing his death as a significant loss to the nation and the continent.
