Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has urged states across the country to adopt what he described as Rivers State’s unique ability to forge broad-based political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike said Rivers State stands alone in its capacity to mobilise support across party lines for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a strategy he termed the “Rainbow Coalition.” He spoke during a thank-you visit to Ahoada West Local Government Area.
The former Rivers State governor said political engagement in the state has shifted from rigid party loyalty to unity, shared interest and collective responsibility for national development. According to him, Rivers has evolved into a political family driven by the ideals of the “Renewed Hope” agenda rather than partisan divisions.
Wike called on political leaders in other states to understudy and replicate the Rivers model, describing it as inclusive, people-driven and organically rooted in consensus. He said such an approach would deliver a decisive victory for President Tinubu in 2027.
He attributed Rivers State’s political strength to a long-standing culture of cooperation and mutual respect, noting that these values have enabled the state to withstand repeated attempts to destabilise its political structure. Wike expressed confidence that, as 2027 approaches, political actors would align around a common platform, stressing that unity remains the most potent force in electoral contests.
The FCT minister, however, cautioned against complacency, admitting that previous political agreements had produced unfavourable outcomes.
“We have made mistakes before. Agreements were reached, people emerged, and everyone saw how it ended. Those errors will not be repeated. Politics requires firmness, clarity and the courage to move forward, not backward,” he said.
Wike dismissed the relevance of opposition forces in Rivers State, insisting that the will of the people has consistently prevailed and that no group has been excluded from the political process.
He commended Rivers residents for supporting President Tinubu at a time when many Nigerians doubted his chances, describing their decision as courageous, patriotic and worthy of recognition.
On his appointment as FCT minister, Wike said the position reflects the resilience and contribution of Rivers people to national development. He added that ongoing infrastructural projects in Abuja mirror the work ethic and commitment traditionally associated with Rivers State.
The minister urged Nigerians to back leaders and policies that deliver tangible results, emphasising that governance should be assessed by performance rather than sentiment.
“Now is the time for unity. Where governance is working, it should be encouraged. Leadership must be built on trust, results and shared responsibility,” he said.
Wike thanked his supporters for their continued loyalty and pledged sustained engagement, describing gratitude as a core principle of leadership.
Earlier, Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Hon. Chita Eugene Epelle, described Wike’s visit as a major honour to the council. He praised the minister’s leadership record and national influence, noting that his impact extends beyond Rivers State.
“Despite your demanding schedule, you chose to visit Ahoada West. We welcome you as our leader, our pride and a worthy son of this land,” Epelle said, reaffirming the council’s support and praying for strength and wisdom for the minister as he continues to serve the nation.
