The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, Alh Atiku Abubakar, and his campaign committee made a statement against the current CBN monetary policy that has alarmed the Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC).

The group demanded that the CBN refrain from utilizing monetary policies and timing of implementation as a political weapon for the benefit of few politicians, to the cost of the suffering masses, in a statement released by its spokesman Israel Uwejeyan.

We see the necessity for economic stability, but we also think the CBN needs to be aware of how its decisions may affect the general public. The inability of the typical Nigerian to access their hard-earned money for daily purchases is making life, which was already difficult, even worse for small company owners and destroying start-ups.

“We beg the PDP presidential campaign council to refrain from exploiting Nigerians’ suffering for their petty political ends. It is essential to promptly alleviate the widespread financial anguish that this policy’s effects have caused among our fellow citizens.

“The PDP and its candidate should not use their lack of financial resources to finance their election and lack of popular support to support an untimely and poorly implemented policy that is putting an incalculable amount of strain on the already overworked citizens of this country,” the statement reads.

They urged the CBN to release new naira notes into circulation and extend the deadline for the retirement of the old currency in order to prevent citizens, particularly in the remote areas of the Niger Delta region and Nigeria, from losing their hard-earned money and to help thousands of small businesses.

“To sum up, the NDYC is urging the CBN to put the welfare of the typical Nigerian first and abstain from participating in political activities or using its policies and timing for political purposes. The CBN must maintain its independence and neutrality and adopt a proactive stance in tackling economic difficulties and promoting economic stability, all the while making sure that the typical Nigerian is not disproportionately impacted by its actions, the group continued.
