• Actress insists appearance remains a powerful currency in showbiz
• Says Nollywood now pays better but only rewards those who’ve ‘paid their dues’

Nollywood star Yvonne Jegede has stirred fresh controversy in the film industry after asserting that physical appearance still plays a dominant role in securing movie roles, despite growing calls for talent-first casting.

Speaking in an interview with Hip TV, the actress defended the industry’s long-criticised obsession with looks, insisting that showbiz thrives on what audiences see.

Jegede explained that while acting requires a mix of abilities, appearance remains a major selling point.
“There are so many things actors can rely on; it’s not just looks,” she said. “But looks are very important because it’s showbiz. What you show people is what brings business, so appearance matters a lot.”

She acknowledged that some actors clinch roles through other means, noting that talent, skill and hard work still count. But she maintained that anyone whose strength is their physical appeal should not hesitate to “bring it forward,” adding that this reality cuts across industries.

On Nollywood’s remuneration structure, Jegede said pay varies depending on “milestones and the dues you’ve paid.”

“If you’ve been here long enough and you’ve paid your dues, you will definitely be paid your worth,” she said.
According to her, the industry has evolved significantly. “I can’t speak for everybody, but for me, Nollywood pays the bills — not all the bills — but it does. I’m very happy with where we are now compared to before.”
