A fire has destroyed or damaged about 21 vehicles at a mechanic workshop in Isheri-Idimu, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The fire broke out at about 3:05am on Oladunni Street, beside Eternal Filling Station. Eyewitnesses said the flames threatened to spread to the adjoining petrol station, raising fears of a major disaster.
However, the quick response of emergency workers prevented the fire from reaching the filling station and nearby buildings.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its Dolphin Response Team, stationed at Igando, was immediately deployed after receiving a distress call.
The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said responders found the workshop engulfed in flames, with several exotic vehicles parked inside and close to the petrol station.
“Through the prompt, professional and coordinated intervention of the LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, supported by the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, the inferno was prevented from spreading to the filling station and surrounding structures, thereby averting what could have been a major disaster,” he said.
Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that firefighters completely extinguished the blaze and completed damping-down operations.
A preliminary assessment showed that about 21 exotic vehicles were affected, while part of a nearby building suffered minor damage.
He added that no deaths or injuries were recorded.
The Lagos State Government, through LASEMA, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property. The agency also praised the emergency responders for their swift action.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents to observe safety measures, especially in workshops and places where flammable materials are handled. He also advised the public to report emergencies through the toll-free numbers 767 and 112.
