President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the launch of Airtel Nigeria’s Open Network initiative, describing it as a move towards greater transparency, stronger consumer protection and improved telecommunications services.

The initiative was unveiled in Lagos on Friday, October 30, 2026, at an event attended by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida.

It allows subscribers to access information about network developments in their areas and report service problems directly to Airtel.

Tinubu said the initiative supports his administration’s efforts to attract private-sector investment, expand digital infrastructure and improve access to reliable telecommunications services across Nigeria.

He also welcomed the growing focus on transparency in the sector, including the NCC’s public network coverage maps, performance reports and consumer satisfaction surveys. These tools help Nigerians understand available services and hold operators accountable.

The President also highlighted the Federal Government’s Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content Initiative, implemented through the NCC in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education and telecommunications operators.

The programme aims to provide eligible students with up to 100MB of free daily data to access approved educational websites and learning resources.

Tinubu recalled his February 2025 meeting with Sunil Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Airtel, at the State House in Abuja. During the meeting, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting telecommunications investment, strengthening regulations and protecting critical digital infrastructure.

He also commended Airtel Nigeria for expanding its network from about 15,000 sites two years ago to more than 17,000 nationwide.

The expansion includes over 1,050 new network sites added during the company’s 2025/26 financial year, including 657 5G sites.

Tinubu said continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure would help improve broadband access, increase network capacity and create more opportunities for businesses and students.

He praised the NCC under Maida’s leadership for its work in strengthening regulation, promoting transparency and protecting consumers.

The President urged telecom operators to continue expanding their networks, especially in underserved communities, and respond promptly to customer complaints.

He added that the value of investment and innovation should be measured by the quality of services Nigerians receive, including better coverage, fewer disruptions and more responsive customer support.
