The Rivers State government has reported a cholera outbreak, confirming five cases and at least nine fatalities across Akuku-Toru and Andoni Local Government Areas.

State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, revealed that the confirmed cases were identified in Akuku-Toru, while the deaths occurred in both Akuku-Toru and Andoni. To combat the outbreak, the ministry has deployed emergency response teams to the affected communities.

Dr. Oreh emphasized the state’s ongoing efforts to educate residents about cholera prevention. She stressed the importance of proper sanitation, drinking safe water, and seeking medical attention for symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration.

“Parents must collaborate with health teams as we work to reduce the outbreak’s impact,” she urged.

She assured the public of the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and pledged to provide regular updates as the situation develops.
