Lawmakers of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the House of Representatives have dismissed claims that they intend to abandon the party, insisting they remain firmly aligned with its leadership and ideology.
The 13 lawmakers, all members of the Kwankwasiya Movement in Kano State, declared their loyalty during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, led by Hon. Garba Diso.
Their clarification followed the defection of two Kano NNPP lawmakers, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin and Hon. Sagir Koki, who crossed over to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during plenary. Diso, speaking for his colleagues, described the circulating reports of planned mass defection as “false and malicious.”
“We categorically debunk these unfounded rumours and urge the public and our supporters to disregard such misleading claims,” he stated.
Diso blamed political detractors for peddling the rumour, saying they are threatened by the NNPP’s rising strength, unity, and influence, especially in Kano and across Nigeria.
He stressed that their engagements with members of other political parties should not be misinterpreted.
“Our interactions with members of other political parties should not be misconstrued as disloyalty or an indication of defection. They reflect our commitment to bipartisan cooperation and good governance,” he said.
Diso reaffirmed their allegiance, noting that the lawmakers remain committed to the NNPP’s values of justice, equity, inclusiveness, and people-centered leadership.
“No amount of misinformation or propaganda will shake our faith in the movement or its leadership,” he added.
He pledged that the lawmakers would continue to serve the NNPP and the people of Kano with loyalty and dedication.
