The National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Peter Ameh, has alleged that the Bola Tinubu administration fears the rising political strength of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and is working behind the scenes to block him from contesting in 2027.
Ameh, who spoke on The Micon Podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, asserted that internal intelligence and political data point to Obi as the only contender the ruling establishment sees as a genuine threat going into the next general election. He accused presidential aide Bayo Onanuga of consistently attacking Obi on social media as part of those efforts.
According to him, the presidency is not concerned about former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, insisting that the administration’s focus remains Obi’s widening national appeal.
“We collect data, we do a lot of engagements behind closed doors, and we know that the only person this government does not want on the ballot is Peter Obi,” Ameh said. “Go and count how many times Bayo Onanuga has posted about Peter Obi. They’re worried.”
He further argued that no political figure since 1999 has stirred voter enthusiasm and electoral upset like Obi did in the 2023 polls, citing victories and near upsets recorded in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.
“It took Peter Obi to come to FCT, the seat of power, and defeat the APC,” he added.
Ameh maintained that the government’s alleged moves are rooted in fear of Obi’s growing influence, youthful backing, and post-2023 momentum.
