The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike has renewed calls for unity within the party, saying it has formally invited the rival group led by Taminu Turaki to come together and build a stronger opposition platform.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Wike-backed faction, Jungudo Mohammed, disclosed this during an interview on Prime Time on Monday.
According to him, repeated efforts to reconcile with the Turaki-led faction have not yielded results, as the group has allegedly failed to respond to invitations without offering any explanation.
The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions in recent times, resulting in the emergence of parallel factions within the party.
Mohammed explained that even before the advisory position of the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, the Wike-aligned group had consistently pushed for reconciliation in a bid to form a united and formidable PDP.
He noted that despite court pronouncements affirming earlier decisions by lower courts, the crisis has persisted, leaving the party under pressure as electoral timelines draw closer.
“With the timetable already released by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the provisions of the new Electoral Act tightening political processes, time is no longer on our side,” Mohammed said.
He stressed that the faction is now focused on moving forward by putting structures in place that would provide a viable platform for aspirants ahead of upcoming elections.
While maintaining that reconciliation remains an open option, Mohammed expressed concern over the unwillingness of the opposing faction to engage.
“Reconciliation is still open, but there is little we can do if those we are reaching out to are not willing to come forward,” he added.
