The end of an era has arrived at Anfield as Mohamed Salah officially confirmed on Tuesday that he will leave Liverpool at the conclusion of the current season. The 33-year-old Egyptian icon shared the news via an emotional video on X, marking what he described as the “first part” of his farewell. Since joining the club in 2017, Salah has evolved from a talented winger into one of the greatest players to ever wear the red shirt, cementing his place in football history.
Salah leaves behind a staggering legacy, sitting third on the club’s all-time leading scorers list with 255 goals in 435 appearances—trailing only the legendary Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. His trophy cabinet is equally impressive, boasting two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, the FA Cup, and several other major honors. He was particularly instrumental in ending the club’s 30-year top-flight title drought during the 2019-20 season. Even late in his tenure, he remained prolific, firing the Reds to another league crown last season with 29 goals.
In his farewell address, an emotional Salah noted that the city and its people became a deep part of his life. “Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a spirit,” he remarked, thanking his teammates and the fans who stood by him. He concluded his message with a poignant nod to the club’s anthem, stating that because of the supporters, he would “never walk alone.”
However, the departure is not without a hint of controversy. Friction began to show in November following an explosive interview where Salah claimed he was being “thrown under the bus” by manager Arne Slot. After being benched for three consecutive matches, the forward admitted he had no working relationship with the Dutchman, signaling a breakdown in communication that likely accelerated his exit. Despite the recent tension, fans are expected to give the “Egyptian King” a massive send-off as he plays his final matches for the club.
