The medical community in Delta State is in mourning following the tragic death of Dr Ogbomade Samson Romani. The young House Officer, based at Central Hospital Warri, passed away in the Intensive Care Unit after collapsing earlier this week. His death comes months after he suffered a brutal assault on duty, an event colleagues believe caused the lingering health issues that led to his sudden collapse.

Reports indicate that the late doctor, a graduate of Niger Delta University, was attacked in February by hoodlums allegedly hired by a patient’s relative. The brutal assault on duty lasted nearly twenty minutes, with the first five minutes occurring right at the hospital gate. Despite his cries for help, security personnel were reportedly slow to intervene. Dr Samson sustained severe abdominal and facial injuries during the attack and had been battling recurring illnesses ever since.

Earlier this week, Dr Samson complained of feeling unwell during a meeting. While walking back to his hostel to rest, he slumped and was rushed to emergency care. Sadly, he did not recover. Fellow doctors describe him as a hardworking and respectful professional who was deeply committed to his patients. His death is the second loss involving the Niger Delta University medical community within a single week, sparking serious fears.

The fact that his attackers were never arrested has caused significant outrage. Medical stakeholders are now calling on the Delta State Government to launch a full investigation into the original brutal assault on duty. There are urgent demands for better security measures to protect healthcare workers in public hospitals. The community insists that no doctor should have to fear for their life while trying to save others.

What specific security reforms should the government implement to ensure that healthcare workers are safe from violence while on duty?
