Award-winning actress Michaela Coel has said the United Kingdom is gradually losing its appeal to many West Africans, with more people choosing a calmer life in countries like Ghana. The actress, who grew up in East London, revealed that she now divides her time between the UK and Ghana, where she feels more comfortable and settled.

Speaking on the current climate in Britain, Coel pointed to ongoing anti-immigration protests as a key reason behind the shift. She described the atmosphere as uneasy, especially after witnessing a demonstration near her London home. “It just seems a bit odd because I don’t think many people are racing to immigrate to the UK like they used to,” she said.

Coel stressed that the UK appeal to West Africans has weakened over time. She explained that many people are now exploring other options if they can. “I think more and more, if people can find a way out, I’m talking particularly for West Africans, they will go. I think the UK has lost the attraction it once had,” she added.

Her remarks come at a time when debates around immigration continue to intensify across the United Kingdom. A recent protest organised by Tommy Robinson drew crowds in London, with participants raising concerns about free speech and migration policies.

As discussions grow louder, Coel’s comments reflect a broader change in how some view life in Britain, particularly among those considering relocation.

Do you think the UK appeal to West Africans can improve in the coming years?
