Lagos building collapse rescue workers searching the rubble in Satellite Town

Lagos building collapse rescue operations have ended after emergency workers pulled 27 people alive from the rubble and recovered nine bodies following the collapse of a two-storey building in Satellite Town, Lagos.

The building collapsed near Alakija Bus Stop in the Amuwo-Odofin area at about 12:47 p.m. on Thursday. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that it completed search, rescue and recovery efforts at about 4:00 a.m. on Friday.

LASEMA said emergency teams responded within 40 minutes after receiving distress calls. The agency deployed its Sharks Response Team and Alpha Cobra Squad alongside firefighters, ambulance crews, police officers, soldiers and other emergency agencies.

Meanwhile, medical teams treated all 27 rescued victims before moving them to nearby hospitals. However, rescuers recovered nine bodies from the debris, including a two-year-old girl. Officials handed the remains to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for identification and release to relatives.

Furthermore, heavy-duty excavators supplied by LASEMA and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation helped rescuers reach trapped victims and safely clear the site.

Following the Lagos building collapse, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency to inspect nearby buildings and enforce building safety regulations.

LASEMA expressed sympathy to the families of those who died. The agency also urged residents to report distressed buildings through its emergency numbers, 112 and 767, to prevent future disasters.

The Lagos building collapse has renewed concerns about building safety and the need for stricter compliance with construction standards across the state.
