Nigerians stranded in South Africa awaiting evacuation after xenophobic unrest

The Federal Government has announced plans to evacuate another batch of Nigerians stranded in South Africa following renewed xenophobic tensions.

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa confirmed the move but did not give a date for the operation. The government said it remains committed to protecting Nigerians stranded in South Africa.

Meanwhile, President of the Nigerian Citizens in South Africa, Rev Frank Onyekwelu, said no attacks on Nigerians had been reported. However, he revealed that looters targeted shops and supermarkets owned by foreign nationals in several areas.

Onyekwelu said local residents broke into businesses and carted away goods. He also reported that one local resident was shot and killed during the unrest, although authorities have not confirmed who fired the shot.

The latest evacuation plan comes as officials continue to monitor the security situation. The Federal Government urged affected Nigerians to remain calm while arrangements continue for their safe return.
