International Alert Nigeria (IAN) has raised concerns over the difficult living conditions of seaside communities in the Niger Delta region, where residents continue to face the effects of oil and gas exploration activities. The organisation said stronger cooperation among stakeholders is needed to support affected communities and promote sustainable development.

Working alongside the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, IAN recently carried out community visits and stakeholder engagements across parts of Akwa Ibom State. The activities focused on understanding local challenges, improving collaboration and identifying areas requiring urgent support.

The engagements took place in Eastern Obolo and nearby communities, with visits to private sector organisations, traditional institutions and community leaders. These discussions allowed government representatives and development partners to gain a clearer understanding of the daily realities faced by residents.

During a visit to Sterling Group/Sumeda Energy, stakeholders discussed how businesses can contribute to local development. Company representatives highlighted their efforts in providing employment opportunities and supporting communities through projects in healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The delegation also met traditional rulers and community representatives, who highlighted concerns about poor infrastructure, limited access to essential services and the need for greater community involvement in development decisions.

Speaking during the engagements, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs stressed the importance of visiting communities directly before designing policies. “There is a difference when you come to see things for yourself. It provides clearer insight and ensures that our interventions are aligned with the real needs of the people,” the Minister stated.

The Country Director of International Alert Nigeria, Dr Kingsley Udo, said effective partnerships remain essential for creating lasting solutions. He noted that “partnerships between government, communities, and the private sector are essential to delivering inclusive and impactful interventions.”

Through these activities, International Alert Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community resilience, encouraging dialogue and supporting inclusive development in oil-producing areas.

Do you think stronger partnerships between communities, government and businesses can improve life in Niger Delta communities?
