Police in Anambra State have arrested a 22-year-old woman, identified as Nwachukwu Blessing, over an alleged case of conspiracy, fraud and self-kidnapping after her family reportedly paid N3 million in ransom.
The Anambra police arrest woman over alleged self-kidnapping followed an investigation into claims that she staged her abduction with the help of two alleged accomplices.
Police said Blessing allegedly worked with a female associate identified as “Onyinye” and another man whose identity remains unknown.
According to the police, the group allegedly planned the incident to obtain money from Blessing’s family.
The Anambra State Police Command said officers from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu arrested Blessing on Friday following credible intelligence.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday.
He said the suspect was reportedly abducted along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway on August 29.
However, her family allegedly paid N3 million as ransom without securing her release. The development raised further questions and prompted the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction.
As a result, investigators arrested Blessing and began efforts to establish what happened and identify the other people allegedly involved.
The police said the suspect is currently assisting investigators with information that could help clarify the case.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, has ordered investigators to intensify the probe.
He also directed officers to identify and arrest anyone found to have participated in the alleged crime.
The Anambra police arrest woman over alleged self-kidnapping remains under investigation. Police have not said whether the alleged accomplices have been arrested.
The case highlights the importance of investigating ransom-related kidnapping reports carefully, especially when victims are not released after payments are made.
Police said anyone found culpable will face prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
