Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his determination to contest the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting he would not step down for any aspirant.
Amaechi made the vow in Kano on Wednesday while addressing journalists after a meeting with a coalition of traders in the state. He stressed that the ADC presidential primary must be open and transparent, adding that the choice of candidate should be left to party delegates.
“I will contest the ADC presidential primary, and by God’s grace, I hope to win so that I can face Tinubu in 2027. I am not stepping down for anyone. Let the people decide who they want to lead,” Amaechi said.
The former Minister of Transport argued that internal competition in the party was essential for democracy, maintaining that every aspirant had the right to test their popularity.
Turning his focus to national politics, Amaechi criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing it as disconnected from the people’s reality. According to him, Nigerians across regions were suffering under the government’s ecoomic and governance policies.
“Whether the government wants to conduct credible elections or not, one thing is certain—time is up. Nigerians are tired because no one is happy under Tinubu, not even in Rivers or across the South. He tries to frame it as a North-South contest, but the truth is people are suffering everywhere,” he declared.
Amaechi’s declaration sets the stage for a fierce political battle within the ADC and raises the stakes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
