United climb to four points heading into international break
Manchester United needed a stoppage-time penalty from captain Bruno Fernandes to secure a crucial 3-2 victory over newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday, easing the mounting pressure on manager Ruben Amorim.
After a humiliating midweek League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town, the Red Devils twice surrendered the lead against Burnley. But Fernandes, who missed from the spot in last weekend’s draw at Fulham, held his nerve in the 97th minute after a VAR review spotted a foul on Amad Diallo.
The win lifts United to four points from their opening three Premier League fixtures and offers some respite for Amorim, whose record in the league now stands at just eight wins in 30 games.
“I’m not thinking about turning points,” Amorim told reporters. “It’s day by day. We have a lot to do, but we returned a little bit to our level today.”
The Portuguese coach had hinted at reconsidering his future following the Grimsby upset but will now hope Saturday’s victory can provide momentum heading into the international break.
Amorim dropped Andre Onana after his costly errors in midweek, yet replacement Altay Bayindir also looked shaky. United remain linked with Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens before Monday’s transfer deadline.
“It’s hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment,” Amorim admitted. “But it’s not just the goalkeepers. The players are struggling with everything around the club, and that is normal. Everybody has to improve.”
