The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has removed more than 400,000 companies from Nigeria’s official companies register in 2025, citing prolonged inactivity and failure to meet statutory obligations.
The Registrar-General of the commission, Hussaini Magaji, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday at an event in Abuja. He said the large-scale deregistration was necessary to sanitize the CAC database and safeguard the integrity of the country’s corporate records.
Magaji explained that the affected companies were either no longer operational or had consistently failed to comply with mandatory filing and regulatory requirements, leaving the commission with no option but to strike them off the register.
According to him, the exercise forms part of broader institutional reforms aimed at ensuring that Nigeria’s companies register remains accurate, credible and reliable for investors, regulators and the general public.
He added that the cleanup is also tied to the commission’s transition from a manual, location-based registry to a fully digital system that delivers end-to-end corporate services.
The Registrar-General noted that the CAC now functions as an online service provider, allowing Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to register and manage businesses remotely without physical visits to CAC offices.
“CAC now offers services anywhere and at any time, 24 hours a day. You can register your business from your room without visiting our offices,” Magaji said.
He recalled that the commission had earlier announced the removal of over 247 companies from its database in August 2025, describing the latest action as a continuation of the same cleanup initiative.
