Daddy Freeze explains why he walked out of Alex Ekubo’s service of songs

|By Chinwendu Nwani – Daddy Freeze explains why he walked out of Alex Ekubo’s service of songs after accusing gospel singer Mercy Chinwo of turning the solemn event into a concert.

The veteran broadcaster made the revelation during an Instagram Live session over the weekend.

Alex Ekubo’s service of songs took place last Wednesday in Lagos. The event attracted pastors, Nollywood stars, gospel singers and other prominent guests who gathered to honour the late actor.

However, Daddy Freeze said he decided to leave before the programme ended.

According to him, the atmosphere changed when Mercy Chinwo mounted the stage to perform.

He argued that funeral ceremonies should feature calm and reflective music rather than energetic performances.

“Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert. At that point, I got up and left,” he said.

Daddy Freeze questioned whether the singer lacked softer songs that would have suited the mood of the occasion.

He added that he would have preferred hymns and worship songs throughout the programme.

“The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have just played hymns for like two hours, then I would have sat down there and enjoyed it,” he stated.

Meanwhile, several gospel artistes performed during the service of songs. They included Mercy Chinwo, Peterson Okopi, Moses Bliss, Ebuka Songs and the Laud Urban Choir.

The remarks have since sparked debate online. While some social media users agreed with Daddy Freeze’s view on funeral etiquette, others defended the performers and described the service as a celebration of life.
