The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has revealed that the Dangote Refinery now supplies an average of 20 million litres of petrol daily to the Nigerian market, marking a major shift in the nation’s fuel supply landscape.

NMDPRA’s Chief Executive Officer, Farouk Ahmed, disclosed this on Thursday during the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) Annual Conference in Lagos.

According to Ahmed, the 650,000-barrel-per-day facility has redefined Nigeria’s fuel distribution dynamics. “Without a shadow of doubt, the operation of the Dangote refinery has changed the supply dynamics with an average daily contribution of up to 20 million litres, undoubtedly with potential for future ramp up,” he stated.

Represented by the NMDPRA spokesperson, George Ene-Ita, Ahmed noted that Nigeria’s current petrol consumption stands at around 50 million litres per day, adding that the refinery’s increasing output could significantly reduce dependence on imports.

“We need to encourage the biggest refinery to do all it can to begin to shape up in order for us to have local consumption and supply ramped up,” he said.

Ahmed also emphasized the need to strengthen energy security by operationalizing petroleum product reserves in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, which would serve as a buffer against major supply disruptions.

The Dangote Refinery, commissioned in 2023, continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s quest for energy self-sufficiency and stability in the downstream sector.
