Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has reignited debate within Nigeria’s music space after boldly asserting that the industry would have lacked excitement without his presence.

Davido made the remark on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, writing, “Imagine no Davido… sh*t [the music industry] would have been boring AF.” The statement quickly drew widespread reactions online, with critics accusing the singer of overstating his influence, while supporters defended his long-standing impact on Afrobeats.

The claim aligns with Davido’s previous assertions about his central role in the industry. In an April 2025 interview with Apple Music, the singer said the Nigerian music scene “shut down” when he took a three-month break from social media in November 2022. The hiatus followed the tragic death of his son, Ifeanyi Adeleke. According to Davido, both fans and critics persistently urged him to return during the period.

Davido rose to national prominence in 2011 with the release of his breakout hit Dami Duro, entering the scene at a time when a new generation of Afrobeats stars, including Wizkid, was reshaping Nigerian pop music.

However, not all industry veterans share Davido’s view of his influence. Veteran producer Samkleff recently argued that Davido’s emergence introduced rivalry and toxicity into the Nigerian music industry. He claimed that before Davido’s rise to fame, artists maintained stronger mutual respect and healthier professional relationships.

The latest comments have once again placed Davido at the center of industry-wide conversations about influence, rivalry, and legacy in Nigeria’s ever-evolving music landscape.
