A devastating flood has killed at least one person and destroyed more than 300 farmlands across three local government areas in Nasarawa State.
The disaster, which struck Doma, Kokona, and Nasarawa LGAs, left dozens of households displaced as torrential rains submerged farmlands, swept away crops, and triggered widespread losses.
Confirming the tragedy in Lafia on Saturday, the Director General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), Benjamin Akwash, said the assessment team found extensive damage, raising fears of food shortages and economic hardship for affected farmers.
“We have consistently warned and educated communities living along floodplains, but many still choose to remain in danger zones. This makes disasters like this difficult to mitigate,” Akwash said.
He noted that despite sustained sensitisation campaigns, many residents in high-risk areas refuse relocation, exposing themselves to avoidable risks whenever heavy rains set in.
Akwash assured that NASEMA is engaging local leaders and stakeholders to strengthen compliance with weather forecasts and early-warning advisories to reduce future casualties.
