Babatunji Wusu –
39 prisoners incarcerated in state correctional facilities for varying sentence terms have been granted mercy by Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe.
As part of the festivities to celebrate the New Year, Yahaya informed the state’s citizens of this on Monday in Gombe through a countrywide broadcast. According to him, the gesture was made to help the prisoners become better people and to celebrate the start of a new year.
“In the spirit of the new year, and in accordance with the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy’s recommendation, I have granted clemency to 39 convicted inmates in our detention centers,” he declared.
26 of the prisoners will receive an unconditional pardon, and the sentences of the remaining 13 will be shortened.
“We sincerely hope that the beneficiaries will seize this chance for a new beginning and turn a new leaf.”
In addition to wishing every inhabitant a prosperous 2024, the governor asked everyone to remember the lessons learned in 2023 and approach the new year with a renewed feeling of hope, resolve, and unity of purpose.
“As stated in our recently passed 2024 budget, dubbed the Budget of Continuity and Consolidation, our focus will be on building a Gombe that leaves no one behind in 2024.”
