Prices of staple grains have plunged across major markets in Yobe State, with dealers reporting steep declines following a surge in supply from both hoarded stock and fresh harvests.

At Ngalda grain market, one of the largest in the state, traders confirmed that maize now sells for between ₦32,000 and ₦35,000 per 100kg bag, while millet goes for ₦31,000 to ₦33,000. Newly harvested millet is even cheaper, ranging from ₦25,000 to ₦26,000.

“White beans currently trade at ₦70,000 to ₦73,000, while red beans fetch between ₦71,000 and ₦76,000. Paddy rice (Shinkafa) has also dropped to ₦35,000–₦37,000, depending on quality,” said Idriss Zakari, a grain dealer.

Zakari attributed the price crash to the continuous release of hoarded stock into the market alongside new harvests, which have boosted supply.

The development has forced many grain dealers and hoarders to count heavy losses as prices continue to tumble.
