The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has unveiled a comprehensive reform agenda for the Nigeria Police Force, declaring the start of a “new era” focused on accountability, professionalism, and rebuilding public trust.

Speaking at the second edition of the National Police Day Grand Parade held at Eagle Square, the IGP said the Force must undergo a fundamental transformation to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

“This moment will define who we are, and who we must become,” Disu stated, noting that the address marked his first national outing since assuming office.

He emphasized that discipline and accountability will be central to his leadership, warning that misconduct within the Force will no longer be tolerated.

“Rank will not shield wrongdoing. Uniform will never excuse abuse. Authority will never override the rule of law. There will be no sacred cows,” he said.

The IGP also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for institutionalising National Police Day, describing the initiative as a demonstration of confidence in the Force’s ability to reform and improve service delivery.

Disu paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their sacrifice as a lasting obligation on the Force to improve standards and operational efficiency. He assured their families that their sacrifices would be honoured through meaningful reforms and improved welfare.

Addressing officers and men of the Force, the IGP acknowledged the risks associated with policing and assured them of improved welfare packages, enhanced training opportunities, and better equipment.

“A respected and professional Police Force must be built on officers who are supported, trained, and treated with dignity,” he said.

Speaking to Nigerians, Disu acknowledged the trust deficit between the Police and the public, promising to bridge the gap through transparency, accountability, and stronger community engagement.

“We hear you. We understand your concerns. We are determined to close that gap,” he said.

The IGP disclosed that the Force has already begun implementing reforms, including strengthened internal disciplinary mechanisms, improved public accountability systems, and greater investment in technology-driven and intelligence-led policing.

According to him, modern policing must be intelligence-driven, technology-enabled, and community-focused, while maintaining strong respect for human rights and the rule of law.

He also called for sustained collaboration with the Armed Forces, other security agencies, traditional institutions, civil society organisations, and the media, stressing that security remains a collective responsibility.

Disu further commended corporate partners and sponsors for supporting the success of the National Police Day celebration, noting that public-private partnerships are essential for improving police welfare and operational effectiveness.

Reaffirming his commitment to reform, the IGP declared that the Nigeria Police Force is entering a new phase defined by integrity, discipline, and service to the nation.

“Let history record that at this moment, we chose courage over complacency, reform over rhetoric, and service over self,” he said.

The event concluded with renewed calls for unity and collective action toward building a safer and more secure Nigeria as the country marked the 2026 National Police Day.
