Senator Sunday Katung, representing Kaduna South in the National Assembly, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was announced on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday, who read out a letter from Katung formally confirming his decision.

In his letter, Katung stated: “I wish to formally confirm my decision to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from the 31st day of October 2025.”

The lawmaker explained that his decision followed careful consideration of the changing political landscape in the country and his constituency. “Over the years, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to the ideals of democracy, good governance, and service to the people, which the PDP then stood for,” he said.

Katung further noted that evolving political realities necessitated a re-evaluation of the platform that could best allow him to serve his constituents. “The APC is a platform whose current direction and leadership provide renewed hope, inclusiveness, stability, and sustainable development,” he added.

Emphasizing that his move was driven solely by the desire to serve, Katung said: “No politician will want to truncate his political ambitions or his political destiny. My decision is guided solely by the desire to serve my constituents and the nation meaningfully.”

With Katung’s defection, the political composition in the Senate is once again shifting, highlighting ongoing realignments ahead of the 2027 general election
