Babatunji Wusu –

Reknown unionist and democracy supporter Frank Ovie Kokori, 80, passed away, according to the Nigeria Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

NUPENG emphasized that Kokori dealt with wounds from his active years of fighting for democracy during his later years.

Williams Akporeha, the president of NUPENG, and Afolabi Olawale, the general secretary, paid tribute to Kokori in a statement, describing him as a passionate supporter and advocate of democracy and labor rights.

“The leadership of our great Union, on behalf of all members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), wishes to announce the news of our former distinguished General Secretary, Comrade Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, passing to eternal resting abode. He passed away in the early hours of Thursday, December 7, 2023,” the statement said.

“The late Comrade Frank Ovie Kokori was a well-known, devoted, and determined defender, promoter, and fighter for citizens’ democratic rights as well as workers’ rights.

“He dedicated his life to the fight for the global emancipation of the working class and the establishment of democratic governance in Nigeria.”

He was brutalized multiple times while fighting for trade unions and against military authority in Nigeria, and he spent years behind bars.

“Like the great Warrior that he was, he lived to a good age before finally surrendering to go home for a peaceful rest after those struggles for humanity. His later years were spent nursing some of the vicious wounds inflicted on him during those struggles.”

“Although we miss Comrade Frank Ovie Kokori dearly, we must find solace in the amazing memories he left behind for us to treasure and honor.

“We are writing to the relatives and loved ones of the departed Elder Statesman to offer our sincere condolences and sympathies.

“Although the entire NUPENG family is saddened by the passing of a great labor icon, we also celebrate his extraordinary life and the ways in which he helped advance our shared efforts to free working people for the benefit of all.”

The late Frank Ovie Kokori was a guiding light for Nigeria’s democratic movements and championed democracy all of his life.

The idea that Chief Frank Kokori has joined his Maker and is undoubtedly resting in the arms of the All-Powerful God gives us comfort. May Chief Frank Kokori’s soul rest in peace.
