By Eppe Franklyne| Canada fought back to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B match on Friday, with substitute Cyle Larin scoring a crucial late equaliser.
The World Cup co-hosts entered the contest without captain Alphonso Davies, who is currently recovering from a hamstring injury. Despite the setback, Canada started brightly but found themselves trailing midway through the first half.
Bosnia and Herzegovina took the lead in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic reacted quickest to a flick-on from a corner kick and guided the ball into the net for his first international goal. The strike gave Bosnia confidence as they attempted to frustrate the hosts and protect their advantage.
Canada responded with increased attacking intensity and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Their best opportunity arrived in the 53rd minute when Richie Laryea looked certain to score, only for Sead Kolasinac to produce a remarkable defensive intervention, diverting the effort onto the crossbar and away from danger.
The hosts continued to dominate possession and create chances throughout the second half. However, a lack of composure in front of goal allowed Bosnia to maintain their slim lead as they dealt with wave after wave of Canadian attacks.
The turning point came when Cyle Larin entered the match in the 76th minute. Just moments after coming on, the striker made an immediate impact. He reacted sharply inside the penalty area, turned his marker and fired a shot that took a slight deflection before finding the back of the net in the 79th minute.
The goal secured a valuable Canada World Cup Draw and sparked celebrations among the home supporters. While Canada will feel they deserved more from the contest, the late equaliser ensured they avoided defeat and collected an important point to begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.
