The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the life ban imposed on Ms. Comfort Emmanson by Ibom Air following an alleged assault on airline crew. Speaking on his official X account, Obi apologized to the airline and its staff but denounced the severity and swiftness of the punishment, which he views as a miscarriage of justice.
Obi drew attention to the systemic flaws within Nigeria’s judicial and enforcement systems, likening the law to a spider’s web that entraps the weak while allowing the influential to escape unscathed. He questioned the absence of due process and the lack of compassionate alternatives, stressing that the young woman’s ban reflects an authoritarian response disproportionate to the offense.
He lamented the glaring inequality in how justice is applied, noting how powerful individuals often evade accountability while ordinary citizens face harsh sanctions without recourse. Obi emphasized that justice must be consistent and inclusive of compassion, rehabilitation, and understanding, particularly when misconduct arises from frustration or emotional distress.
“This is a tragic irony where the pain of the poor remains invisible, and dignity is often disregarded,” Obi said, urging the nation to uphold fairness and empathy in its legal and social systems.
