- Force says N100m transfer to Victor Egbetokun was reversed immediately
- Hundeyin denies claim funds came from Anambra security vote
- Former IGP Kayode Egbetokun recently stepped down
The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the N100 million paid into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, was a banking error that was promptly corrected.
The clarification followed an online report alleging that the funds originated from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin said the transfer was detected and reported by Victor himself.
“You could remember when he said N100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP. I called the son of the IGP immediately to know what was going on, and he explained,” Hundeyin said.
“He said he saw N100 million in his account and told his accounts officer to reverse it immediately, which he did,” he added.
Hundeyin further disclosed that Victor printed his bank statement to confirm the refund, closed the account afterward, and wrote a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission seeking investigation into the allegation.
The police maintained that the transaction was purely a banking error and that the funds were returned to the Anambra State Government shortly after discovery.
Meanwhile, Kayode Egbetokun recently stepped down as Inspector-General of Police at the request of President Bola Tinubu. He is expected to be replaced by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, with arrangements ongoing for a formal handover.
