Ayodele Samuel, publisher of Taraba Truth and Facts and CEO of Rock FM Jalingo in Taraba State, has been detained for roughly nine days as a result of a report accusing the governor of questionable agreements in the privatization of public properties.

He was prosecuted in court and given bail, but it is said that the authorities won’t let him go. The 5th of December saw his prison sentence.

According to a story published on Thursday by The Taraba Truth and Fact, their publisher has been held for nine days while efforts are made to secure his release.

The state administration filed two counts of defamation and harmful untruth against the publisher, and he was then charged before magistrate Garba Garba in Jalingo, the state capital.

The newspaper’s story, according to the government, was inaccurate and damaged the governor of the state’s reputation by suggesting wrongdoing in the privatization of the Mambilla Beverages Company and the sale of the state’s liaison office in Abuja.

However, Mr. Samuel, the accused, entered a not guilty plea to the two counts. The judge later granted him bail.

A ten million naira (N10,000,000) fee as well as two sureties with five million naira (N5,000,000) worth of landed property each and who lived in Jalingo, Taraba State, were included in the bail conditions.

It was unclear why Mr. Samuel was not freed after fulfilling the bond requirements and instead was kept in custody at the police headquarters.

Mr. Samuel said that the state government had attempted to arrest him before he was taken into custody.

He added that the Taraba State Government was upset with some of his articles, particularly one that claimed Governor Darius Ishaku intended to sell the Taraba liaison office.

Hours after providing the statement, he was detained and sent to the State Magistrate Court in Taraba, where he was accused of being tried without due process or legal counsel. He was then remanded in custody, where he is currently being held without access to either his family or attorneys.

Meanwhile, Mr. Samuel’s arrest has been criticized by Bako Benjamin, a human rights activist, and others.
