The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has sealed a partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals to intensify the fight against illegal mining and maximise the nation’s mineral wealth.

The collaboration was cemented during a courtesy visit by the Mining Marshals, led by their commander, ACC Attah John Onoja, to the RMRDC headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

Onoja said the Marshals’ mission goes beyond providing security to ensuring mineral extraction strictly follows national laws and contributes to Nigeria’s economic growth. He emphasised that synergy with the RMRDC was critical in accessing data, leveraging technical expertise, and strengthening the prosecution of offenders.

“This visit is about synergy,” he declared. “To secure Nigeria’s mineral wealth, the Mining Marshals must work hand-in-hand with research institutions like the Raw Materials Council. Together, we can hold offenders accountable and ensure the sector delivers full value to the country.”

RMRDC Director-General, Professor Nnanyelugo Ike-Muanso, praised the Marshals for their discipline and commitment in curbing illegal mining. He pledged the Council’s full backing through data sharing, joint training, laboratory analyses, and technical support.

“We recognise the critical role security plays in adding value to raw materials. This collaboration will align our scientific efforts with realities in the field,” Ike-Muanso said.

Delivering a goodwill message from NSCDC Commandant-General Ahmed Abubakar Audi, Onoja reaffirmed the corps’ resolve to provide security during mineral mapping, especially in high-risk terrains where researchers and technical experts face dangers.
