Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has recounted how the death of her father at the age of 16 left her devastated and changed the course of her life, saying she was written off by many people in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Rosman said the loss plunged her into deep grief and pushed her to the brink of suicide.
She said the emotional pain was compounded by harsh comments from people around her, who predicted a bleak future for her following her father’s death.
“After I lost my dad at 16, many people said to me that I would end up becoming a prostitute and get pregnant out of wedlock,” she said.
Rosman said the experience, though traumatic, eventually became a turning point in her life, as she channelled her pain and financial hardship into determination and ambition.
She noted that her difficult upbringing shaped her drive for success, adding that comfort might have reduced her level of ambition.
“Grief can drive you to a point of suicide because grief is probably one of the hardest things to overcome,” she said. “My tough upbringing definitely prepared me to want to do better every day. I don’t know how ambitious I would have been if I grew up in a very comfortable environment.”
She added that the setbacks she faced after her father’s death ultimately pushed her to work harder and remain focused on building her career in Nollywood.
