President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed that he will personally lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, this September. The announcement was made by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Ibrahim, Tinubu UNGA 2026 will provide an important platform for Nigeria to present the reforms introduced by the current administration to world leaders, investors and development partners. “The President was able to give us his word. Now he will come to UNGA this September,” the envoy said. He added that the President would participate in several high-level engagements covering energy, education, healthcare and hospital management.
The President attended the 78th UN General Assembly in person but was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 79th and 80th sessions. Ibrahim said Tinubu UNGA 2026 would strengthen Nigeria’s engagement with international organisations and provide opportunities to deepen global partnerships.
He also disclosed that President Tinubu plans to seek greater international support for improving border policing in West Africa. According to Ibrahim, porous borders remain a major security concern, allowing terrorists, arms traffickers and other criminal groups to operate across the region. He noted that Nigeria is already working with the United Nations on a regional border security initiative and will seek wider international cooperation during the assembly.
The envoy also mentioned the possibility of a meeting between President Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump, although he said no formal bilateral talks had yet been confirmed.
During Tinubu UNGA 2026, the President is expected to deliver Nigeria’s address at about 10.45 a.m. New York time, outlining the country’s position on international peace and security, economic development, climate change and reforms of global institutions.
The 81st UN General Assembly will open on September 8, while the general debate is scheduled for September 22 to 28, 2026, bringing together world leaders to discuss major global issues.
