Eppe Franklyne| Victor Wembanyama has produced several decisive moments to guide the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals, but recent missed opportunities have left the team facing a difficult path in the championship series. The towering French star endured another frustrating night as the Spurs slipped to a heartbreaking defeat against the New York Knicks, leaving them one loss away from elimination.
In Game 4, Wembanyama had the chance to strengthen San Antonio’s lead with 1:47 remaining. However, he missed both free throws while the Spurs held a one-point advantage. The New York Knicks quickly took control of the moment, and OG Anunoby delivered the decisive blow with a tip-in basket with just 1.2 seconds left, sealing a dramatic 107-106 win and a commanding 3-1 series lead.
Reflecting on the missed shots, Wembanyama remained composed. “It’s just a shot,” Wembanyama said. “You might work on your form hours and hours. At the end of the day it’s just a shot, so you need to shoot it the normal way.”
Despite recording 24 points and 13 rebounds, the young star managed only eight points after the break as the NBA Finals took a dramatic turn. The Knicks erased a huge 29-point deficit, completing the largest comeback in NBA Finals history.
The Spurs now return home for Game 5 on Saturday knowing defeat will end their title challenge. Wembanyama insisted the team will respond positively to the setback.
“It’s going to go one of two ways,” Wembanyama said. “The bad one would be giving up. The good one would be getting stronger through this, getting more together. I know this is what we’re going to do.”
Adding to the pressure, Wembanyama is now one flagrant foul point away from an automatic suspension after an elbow on Karl-Anthony Towns. He admitted fatigue may have contributed to the collapse after spending nearly 44 minutes on court during the dramatic NBA Finals contest.
