By Eppe Franklyne| Mexico launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa, delighting a crowd of 80,824 fans and delivering the first major statement of the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The hosts took control from the opening whistle, dominating possession and applying relentless pressure on the South African defence. Their bright start paid off in the ninth minute when Julian Quiñones capitalised on a defensive error, collecting a loose ball on the edge of the box before calmly firing past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give Mexico an early advantage.

Mexico continued to dictate play throughout the first half, creating several opportunities to extend their lead. Quiñones came close again when he struck the outside of the post, while Raúl Jiménez repeatedly tested the South African backline. Despite the pressure, South Africa nearly levelled before the break, but goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced an excellent save to deny Mbekezile Mbokazi.

The match swung further in Mexico’s favour shortly after the restart when Yaya Sithole received a straight red card in the 49th minute for a dangerous challenge. With a numerical advantage, Mexico increased their control and eventually doubled their lead in the 67th minute. A perfectly delivered cross from Roberto Alvarado found Raúl Jiménez, who powered a header into the bottom corner to seal the victory.

Late drama saw disciplinary issues dominate the closing stages. Themba Zwane was dismissed after a VAR review, reducing South Africa to nine men, while César Montes received a red card for Mexico deep into stoppage time.

Despite the late incidents, Mexico World Cup Victory was never in doubt as Javier Aguirre’s side comfortably closed out the contest. The result gives Mexico an ideal start to their tournament ambitions, while South Africa must regroup quickly ahead of their next group-stage match.
