Nigerian music star Yemi Alade has revealed that she once struggled with a short-lived cigarette addiction during her university days but quit after realizing its harmful effects on her health and career.
The Johnny crooner made the revelation in a candid chat with Chude Jideonwo, where she opened up about her brief experience with smoking, describing it as a phase that “didn’t work out.”
Alade admitted that she became dependent on cigarettes at one point, saying she often needed to smoke before going to bed. However, the discomfort of hiding the habit in public and the damage it caused to her voice made her abandon it.
“When I was in the university, I tried smoking. It did not work out. But before it did not work out, it worked out a bit too much. I started needing to smoke before I went to bed. I was getting addicted,” she said.
“In public, I would hide the cigarette. So I asked myself, ‘What’s this life where I have to hide something I do?’ As a teenager trying to figure out life, I decided that if I have to hide to do something, then it’s not for me. Cigarettes are not for me — they harmed me and affected my voice.”
The award-winning singer emphasized that her smoking phase lasted less than a year, noting that self-awareness and personal discipline helped her quit before it caused lasting damage.
