The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has condemned the impeachment proceedings initiated against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing the move as a direct affront to the will of the people and a calculated attempt to destabilise the state.

IYC President, Alaye Theophilus, delivered the condemnation during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday, hours after the Rivers State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The council accused the Assembly of acting against popular sentiment and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately remove Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, alleging that he is fueling political unrest in the oil-producing state.

According to the IYC, recent developments have exposed what it termed “the true enemies of Rivers State,” insisting that Wike’s continued stay in office undermines democratic principles and good governance.

The council also threw its weight behind Governor Fubara’s second-term ambition while reaffirming support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, commending the President’s efforts at national repositioning.

“The IYC, alongside the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality, stands firmly behind the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara,” Theophilus declared.

The Rivers State House of Assembly had earlier announced the commencement of impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, both members of the All Progressives Congress. Speaker Martins Amaewhule said the lawmakers accused the duo of gross misconduct and disclosed that the notice of allegations would be served on the governor within seven days.
