Police in Lagos State have uncovered a major drug trafficking network and seized suspected narcotics valued at about ₦7.8 billion during a coordinated raid in the Mende area of Maryland.

The operation, carried out by the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the Special Protection Unit (SPU) and divisional detectives, led to the arrest of several suspects, including an alleged kingpin, Eke Henry Ifeanyi, aged 41.

Officers reportedly recovered hundreds of bags of suspected Canadian Loud from an apartment inside a gated estate.

Months of surveillance led to arrest

Police said the suspect had been under surveillance for several months before the operation was executed on 19 May.

During the raid, officers also alleged that the suspect attempted to offer a ₦500 million bribe to the SPU commander in a bid to halt the operation and facilitate the movement of the drugs. The offer was rejected and formally recorded as evidence.

Police commend officers’ conduct

Speaking at the scene, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, said the operation reflected improved coordination and intelligence-led policing.

He explained that the deployment of specialised units alongside divisional commands was designed to strengthen rapid response, ensure professionalism, and prevent interference with investigations.

He also praised the conduct of officers involved, particularly the rejection of the alleged bribe, describing it as consistent with expected professional standards.

IGP highlights reform strategy

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, said the operation validates ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening grassroots policing and improving collaboration between specialised units and local divisions.

He added that the police would continue to prioritise integrity, accountability, and intelligence-led operations in tackling organised crime.

Investigation continues

Police say exhibits recovered from the scene have been documented and will be tendered in court. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue to identify other members of the alleged trafficking network.a
