Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has berated the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly targeting the social media account of former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.
The DSS reportedly petitioned social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to delete one of Sowore’s posts, claiming it posed a national security threat and violated Nigerian law.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Adeyanju described the move as “unacceptable” and a direct assault on democracy. He argued that no government agency should deploy state power to silence dissenting voices.
“The targeting of Omoyele Sowore’s account by the DSS is unacceptable and should be condemned. Every citizen has the right to freely share their opinions, even when those opinions do not align with those in authority,” Adeyanju stated.
He noted that Sowore had long been a victim of intolerant regimes yet continued to voice his opinions with resilience. According to him, Sowore’s persistence exemplifies courage in the face of state intimidation.
Adeyanju further stressed that Sowore, having contested for the presidency, deserves respect for his contributions to national discourse, regardless of how unsettling his views may be to those in power.
