Arne Espeel, a Belgian goalkeeper, passed away on Saturday at the age of 25 after collapsing on the field just after saving a penalty for an amateur side.

Winkel Sport B, a team from West Brabant’s second provincial league in Belgium, had a 2-1 lead over Westrozebeke at the time of their opponent’s second-half penalty.

Espeel reportedly stopped the penalty kick but then collapsed to the ground, according to sources in Belgian media. Espeel was revived using a defibrillator by emergency personnel who raced to rescue him, but he was declared dead soon after being transferred to the hospital.

The match was place at the club’s home field in the West Flanders Province town of Sint-Eloois-Winkel.

The club released a statement saying, “Winkel Sport is in very deep sadness by the sudden passing of Arne Espeel.

“We extend our sincere sympathies to Arne’s family and friends during this difficult time. It comes after football.

Espeel was supposed to have an autopsy on Monday to discover the reason of his demise.

More than a thousand people reportedly showed up to pay respect to Espeel on Monday evening, according to a report in the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.
