Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has called for the Federal Capital Territory to be allocated three senators, arguing that the territory deserves equal representation with Nigeria’s states.

Speaking at a grassroots mobilisation event, Yesufu said Abuja’s growing population and land mass justify increased representation in the National Assembly.

According to her, the FCT is more populated than at least 10 states and larger in land size than eight others.

“The FCT has gone past the stage where we have to struggle for one senator,” she said. “FCT should have three senators. It will be for the betterment of Abuja as a whole.”

Yesufu argued that additional representation would strengthen the voice of Abuja residents in the Senate and improve legislative attention to issues affecting the capital territory.

“With this, the good people of Abuja will have more representatives and their voice will be heard. Instead of one person, you will have three persons speaking at the red chamber of the National Assembly for the FCT people,” she added.

The activist acknowledged that such a constitutional change would be challenging but insisted it was achievable.

“This is one of the things I will push for as a senator. It’s not going to be easy but it’s doable,” she said.

Yesufu is expected to contest for the FCT senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
